SUBJECT: You’ve got the TOUCH!
Your CLICKER is a VERY POWERFUL dog training TOOL. Only use it in the way it is instructed in class. Here is a CLICKER information sheet (PDF) to accompany your new NOT–A–TOY!
Put your hand out and let your dog come to it and touch it with his or her nose. At the moment they touch your hand CLICK or MARK the behavior and treat your dog. When you are ready to bet $20 that your dog will touch your hand when you present it, say TOUCH or COME! (you pick the cue you want to use) BEFORE you put your hand out.
When your dog is responding to TOUCH/COME! on command, start to present your hand in different places in relation to the dog. 1 foot from them, 2 feet away, the other side of their face, above their head (so they have to stretch, not so they have to jump for it).
Do this away from home and all around the house and yard.
Practice this for a few seconds (up to a minute or two) at a time throughout the day.
The more commands your dog knows and will do reliably the more comfortable they’ll be in unusual situations and the more control you will have.
