Is your dog getting a little stir crazy this winter? Tricks are not only a fun thing to show your friends, they are great for keeping your dog occupied during the winter months. Just teaching your dog a few new tricks can strengthen your bond and make him more obedient. So since it looks like the snow will be hanging out for a little while, why not teach your dog a trick? Even old dogs can learn a few new ones...

Is Walking THAT Important?
Walking your dog is important not only for his physical fitness, but it keeps his nose and brain sharp as well. And its a better way for him to burn off excess energy than, say, un-stuffing all of his toys, and its great for you, too! Read more on how to walk him most effectively and some things to think about when you head out.
Autonomous Learner Model
Marilyn Tokach has been honored to be asked by a local 7th grader for her assistance as a real-world expert in the field she wants to study. Her project will consist of analyzing dog-on-dog aggression and dog-on-human aggression, including case studies and techniques used to solve these problems. We look forward to working with Jordan!
Focus on What You Want
Being focused is essential to achieving the kind of consistency you need to properly train your dog. Throughout the day, spend some time focusing on your dog and what you want from him. It can make all the difference in your training. Read more.
Tempting Training Treats (for Dogs)
*Courtesy of Bullwrinkle.com.
Ingredients: 2 1/3 cups flour- all-purpose or whole wheat 1/4 cup olive oil 1/4 cup apple sauce 1/2 cup grated cheese (like parmesan) 1 large egg 1 tsp. garlic powder (Pure Spirit recommends substituting 1 clove or 1 tsp. finely chopped garlic) 1/4 cup powdered milk (non-fat)
Instructions: Combine all ingredients in a large bowl; mix well. Roll the dough out to the size of a cookie sheet. Pat the dough onto a lightly greased cookie sheet, bringing it to the edges. Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut desired sizes into the dough (just score through). If you are using as training treats, cut them into small pieces. Sprinkle a little extra cheese and garlic on top if desired for flavor. Bake in a 350 degree oven for about 15 minutes or until golden brown. Turn off the oven and let cool for a few hours. They will keep hardening the larger you leave them. Break them apart. Store tightly covered or in the freezer.
Molasses Horse Cookies

Ingredients: 1 1/2 cup all purpose flour 1 cup bran 1 cup molasses 1 cup grated carrot/apple
Instructions: Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Oil two cookie sheets. Put aside a small bowl of white sugar and a drinking glass with a flat bottom. In a large bowl mix all ingredients thoroughly. The mixture shouldn't be too wet and it should stick together. Add more flour to make the mixture firmer and hold together if necessary. Drop by teaspoonfuls about 1 1/2 inch apart on greased cookie sheet. Grease the bottom of the glass, dip it in sugar, and stamp the cookies to flatten them slightly. Bake for about 10 minutes. This makes about 25 cookies, depending on size. Store in air-tight container or bag.
